AMD's FSR 4.1 upscaling is coming to Xbox
AMD's FSR 4.1 upscaling is coming to Xbox consoles and handhelds.
Key facts
- It uses machine learning to make lower-resolution images look sharper.
- AMD and Microsoft name Xbox Series X and S and the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld.
- No date has been given for the consoles; a preview on handhelds starts October 23.
AMD announced on October 20, 2026, that its FSR 4.1 upscaling technology will come to Xbox devices. FSR stands for FidelityFX Super Resolution. It uses machine learning to build a sharper, higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution one. This can help games look better and run faster.
According to AMD's newsroom, support is "coming soon" to Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. AMD also names the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X handheld. Let's Data Science and Inven Global report that ASUS plans a preview driver for the ROG Xbox Ally X and Xbox Ally X20 on October 23. ASUS warns that a preview may contain bugs. Reports differ on whether the cheaper base Xbox Ally model will get it.
On PC, FSR 4.1 is available now through the Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1 driver. It now works on older Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards and on some Ryzen laptop and handheld chips. AMD first offered FSR 4 on its RX 9000 cards in 2025.
Xbox's Scott Van Vliet said Microsoft worked closely with AMD to optimise the technology for developers. Microsoft said its next-generation hardware, Project Helix, will use a newer technology called FSR Diamond.
Several things are still unknown. Neither AMD nor Microsoft has given a date for the consoles, a list of games, or details on how well it will run on Series S. According to reports, on Xbox Series X and S developers will have to add FSR 4.1 to their games through updates, so it will not work automatically in older games.
